An RFID wallet is a wallet made of a special material that can block and/or interrupt radio waves. RFID stands for Radio Frequency Identification, which is a technology that uses radio waves to read, write, and store data onto a chip attached to an item. RFID credit cards enable you to pay for items by simply tapping it against a card reader as opposed to swiping or inserting your card. However, this technology can make it easier for others to steal your information. Tech-savvy thieves might use an RFID reader to scan the information from your credit card, and this is where an RFID-blocking wallet comes in. The wallet is made of a special material that can block and/or interrupt radio waves, preventing unwanted radio frequencies from accessing your cards information. An RFID-blocking wallet contains carbon fiber or metal-based layers or wrappings that effectively block the electromagnetic fields from RFID-scanning devices from reaching your RFID-enabled card. An RFID-blocking wallet will indeed prevent unwanted RFID-scanning devices from obtaining the information stored on your card as long as the card is inside the wallet. While the technology is out there to scan your RFID-enabled cards and obtain your payment information, there have been very few instances of RFID crime. Companies that make RFID-protection products have championed the threat of RFID theft, but experts say there is little to no risk of it actually happening to you.
