The Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit, also known as the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), was a major United Nations conference held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from June 3-14, 1992. The primary objective of the summit was to produce a broad agenda and a new blueprint for international action on environmental and development issues. The assembled leaders signed the Declaration on Global Climatic Change and Biological Diversity, endorsed the global Forest Principles, and adopted Agenda 21 for achieving Sustainable Development in the 21st century. Agenda 21 is a declaration signed by world leaders in 1992 at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) at Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It aims at achieving global sustainable development and to combat environmental damage, poverty, and disease through global cooperation on common interests, mutual needs, and shared responsibilities.
