Rohypnol is a trade name for flunitrazepam, which is a central nervous system depressant that belongs to a class of drugs known as benzodiazepines. It is used in the short-term treatment of insomnia, as a pre-medication in surgical procedures, and for inducing anesthesia. Rohypnol is not legally available for prescription in the United States, but it is legal in many countries worldwide for the treatment of insomnia. It is a small white tablet that can be swallowed as a pill, dissolved in a drink, or snorted. Rohypnol is also known as the "date rape drug" because it has been used to commit sexual assaults due to its ability to sedate and incapacitate unsuspecting victims, preventing them from resisting sexual assault. It is frequently used in combination with alcohol and other drugs, and sometimes taken to enhance a heroin high, or to mellow or ease the experience of coming down from a cocaine or crack high. The drug can cause extreme drowsiness (or "blackouts"), making it easier for perpetrators to commit sexual assault.
