Roving yarn is a type of thick, bulky yarn that is not twisted or plied like many other types of yarn. It is a single strand of fiber that is slightly twisted, which gives it a bulky look and feel. Roving yarn is produced during the process of making spun yarn from wool fleece, raw cotton, or other fibers. The fibers are drafted into strands using commercial machines that comb the fibers so that they all go in one direction and force them tightly together so that theres very little air in between the fibers. Roving yarn is used to create quick, bulky, and admittedly heavy projects and gives the knitted piece a rather rustic look. In the world of finished yarn, roving is sometimes used to refer to super bulky weight yarn on the Craft Yarn Council of Americas scale of yarn weights. Roving yarn can also be referred to as sliver or slubbing.
