RTD stands for "Referee Technical Decision" in boxing. It is a term used to describe a scenario in which a referee ends a fight before the scheduled rounds due to certain circumstances. An RTD can occur when a boxer refuses to continue or their corner pulls them out, forcing the referee to call an end to the fight during any rest period between rounds. It is important to note that an RTD still counts as a type of knockout and is displayed as a stoppage result on a boxers win/loss record. In contrast, a technical knockout (TKO) may only be declared by the referee or ringside doctor, at any stage of the fight including rest periods. A TKO is typically declared when a fighter is no longer capable of defending themselves effectively, often due to sustained punishment, while an RTD is invoked based on the referees assessment of the fighters condition due to factors other than direct combat.
