Sainik Schools are a system of public schools in India established and managed by the Sainik Schools Society under the Ministry of Defence. The schools were conceived in 1961 by V. K. Krishna Menon with the objective of preparing students to lead as officers in the Defence Services of the country. The schools select bright and promising students through an All India Sainik School Entrance Examination (AISSEE) and focus on molding their overall personality with emphasis on extracurricular activities. The medium of instruction is English. Sainik schools are ordinary citizens public schools where deserving students get high-quality education irrespective of their income or class background. Seats are reserved for children of SC/ST and serving/retired defense personnel. The Sainik Schools Society is an organization under the Ministry of Defence, and the Chief Executive Body of the Sainik Schools Society is a Board of Governors functioning under the Chairmanship of the Defence Minister. The schools offer a welcoming environment where students can flourish and establish roots in both curricular and extracurricular activities. The schools aim to provide a technologically advanced and inclusive environment for students. The Sainik Schools Society will provide affiliation to interested private or government schools based on certain objective criteria related to academic and infrastructure.
