Salam (Arabic: سلام, salām) is an Arabic word that literally means "peace" and is used as a general greeting, especially in Arab countries and by Muslim countries around the world. The greeting "As-salamu alaykum" (ٱلسَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ) is a standard salutation among Muslims, whether socially or within worship and other contexts. It means "peace be upon you" and the typical response to the greeting is "wa-ʿalaykumu as-salām" (وَعَلَيْكُمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), which means "and upon you be peace".

In addition to being a greeting, "salaam" can also refer to a physical gesture of respect or submission. A "salaam" is an obeisance performed by bowing very low and placing the right palm on the forehead.

The Arabic "salam" comes from the same origin as the Hebrew "shalom". The greeting has become a religious salutation for Muslims worldwide when greeting each other, though its use as a greeting pre-dates Islam and is also common among Arabic speakers of other religions, such as Arab Christians and Mizrahi Jews.
