A sanitary inspector, also known as a health inspector or sanitarian, is a technical person authorized by the implementing authority to inspect water supply and sanitation. They are responsible for checking sanitary conditions, equipment, and operating procedures at various facilities such as grocery stores, dairy plants, restaurants, and healthcare facilities. Sanitary inspectors are also responsible for enforcing the state sanitary code and environmental codes. They are trained to detect environmental risks to health due to deficiencies in sanitation, ventilation, food, and other factors. Sanitary inspections are short, standardized observation checklists that can be used to assess risk factors at or near sanitation facilities and identify appropriate actions to safeguard public health. These inspections support the implementation of the WHO Guidelines on sanitation and health. Sanitary inspectors may be community representatives, government officers such as environmental health inspectors, or field officers from national and international organizations.
