Sawm is the Arabic term used to describe the act of fasting in Islam. It is one of the Five Pillars of Islam and is observed during the holy month of Ramadan, which is the ninth month in the Muslim calendar. During this month, Muslims are required to abstain from food, drink, smoking, sexual activity, and anything which substitutes food and drink from dawn until nightfall when the adhan of the Maghrib prayer is sounded. The purpose of the fast is to practice self-restraint, piety, and generosity. Fasting should be a motive to be more benevolent to fellow creatures, and charity to the poor and needy in this month is one of the most rewardable worships. The benefits of Sawm (Fasting During Ramadan) are so many whether physically, mentally, or spiritually. Some of these benefits are that fasting cleanses the soul, helps to control desires, and reminds Muslims of the teachings of the Qur’an because the whole Qur’an is usually recited throughout this month.
