The scalar chain is a principle of management that refers to a linear flow of communication in an organization, where information is relayed through an unbroken chain of supervisors ranging from the ultimate authority to the lowest rank. The scalar chain was developed by Henri Fayol, who defined it as a chain of all supervisors from the top management to the person working in the lowest rank. The principle of scalar chain means a straight line of authority from top-level management to the ground level. The scalar chain promotes effective communication and helps to achieve organizational goals faster. However, following every path strictly takes time and creates a delay in message delivery, so in an emergency situation, it may not be effective. Fayol stated that the scalar chain should be followed strictly except for emergencies.
