ScreenX is a panoramic film format that provides moviegoers with a 270-degree viewing experience by expanding the screen onto the side walls of the auditorium. It was created in 2012 in South Korea and is the worlds first multi-projection theater technology. ScreenX uses an array of projectors on each side of the theater to blend multiple images into one seamless image extending from the center out. The walls of the theater are specifically created and installed with a special fabric that ensures brightness and color to closely match the center screen along the full length of the auditorium. ScreenX has achieved successful box-office results since 2018, with Top Gun: Maverick being the highest-grossing release in 2022.

Some key features of ScreenX include:

  • 270-degree panoramic viewing experience: ScreenX uses three walls rather than one, with the left and right walls of the theater also serving as screens.
  • Multiple projectors: ScreenX utilizes up to twelve additional laser digital projectors to form the wing images.
  • Sound: ScreenX auditoriums strategically place audio systems and speakers to ensure they do not interfere with the immersive 270-degree experience.
  • Adapting movies for ScreenX: Footage for the left and right screens in a ScreenX theater is created during a movies primary production phase or with post-production effects work.

ScreenX is available in theaters in many countries, including the United States.
