Specially Designed Instruction (SDI) is a term used in special education to refer to instruction that is tailored to a particular students needs. It is defined in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as "adapting, as appropriate to the needs of an eligible child under this part, the content, methodology, or delivery of instruction—(i) To address the unique needs of the child that result from the child’s disability; and (ii) To ensure access of the child to the general curriculum". SDI is delivered by a special education teacher or a related services provider, and it is planned, organized, and meaningful, delivered in an explicit, intentional, and systematic manner. It is individualized and specific to the student, and it teaches specific skills that a student does not have but needs to access and progress in the general education curriculum. SDI can be provided in a variety of domains, including academic, behavioral, and social. It is not the same as differentiation, accommodation, or modification. SDI is a crucial part of special education and helps students with disabilities achieve academic goals.
