Seborrhea, also known as seborrheic dermatitis, is a common skin condition that causes a red, itchy rash and white scales on oily areas of the body, such as the scalp, face, sides of the nose, eyebrows, ears, eyelids, chest, armpits, groin area, or under the breasts. It can also occur in other areas of the body with the most sebaceous (oil) gland activity, such as the upper back and chest, the creases at the base of the nose, behind the ears, navel (belly button), eyebrows, under the breasts, and in the creases/bends of the arms, legs, and groin. Seborrhea is caused by a yeast-like organism and is more common in people with oily skin, Parkinsons disease, AIDS, and certain medical conditions. It can be treated with medicated shampoos, sulfur products, topical corticosteroid preparations, topical antifungals, and calcineurin inhibitors. Although seborrhea can go away without treatment, it is a lifelong condition that appears, disappears with treatment, and flares up from time to time.
