Selvage, also spelled selvedge, is the self-finished edge of a fabric that runs along each side of the lengthwise grain, which is also called the fabrics warp. It is the tightly woven edge that prevents the side edges of the fabric from raveling or fraying. The selvage is stronger than the rest of the fabric and is usually visible by either having a slightly different weave or texture, or sometimes a slight different color, sometimes there are makers marks and text down the edge. The selvage provides information about the fabrics grain, including the designers name, color swatches, and the name of the fabric. There is no standard width of selvages, but most are around ½ inch. The selvage is finished and will have a sturdy edge often with markings on it such as the designers name, color swatches, and the name of the fabric. It is important to know and understand the selvage as it can help you find the grain of the fabric, or find the bias, and it can even help you find the wrong and right sides of fabric.
