The sex ratio in India is the ratio of females to males in the population. It has been estimated using various methods and data sets, including the decennial censuses, the National Family Health Surveys (NFHS), the Civil Registration System, the Sample Registration System, and the Health Management Information System. According to the 2011-2013 population census with the Sample Registration System (SRS), the sex ratio of India was 909 females per 1000 males. It has since decreased to 900 females in 2013-2015 and 896 in 2015-17 per 1000 males. However, the sex ratio at birth has begun to normalize slightly over the last decade, narrowing to about 109 boys in the 2015-16 wave of the National Family Health Survey and to 108 boys in the latest wave of the NFHS, conducted from 2019-21. According to a report by the Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, the sex ratio at birth went up by three points to 907 in 2018-20 from 904 in 2017-19, and it is expected to improve to 952 by 2036. The gender ratio in India was approximately 907 women to every one thousand men between 2018 to 2020. The declining sex ratio in India has been a cause for concern, and the government has implemented policies to mitigate the problem, such as outlawing fetal sex determination in 1994.
