Sexual self refers to how an individual thinks about themselves as a sexual being. It is the totality of oneself as a sexual being, including positive and negative concepts and feelings. Sexual self-concept is an important predictor of contraceptive behavior among teenagers. It originates from past experiences to present sexual experiences and affects the process of sexual behaviors related to social factors. Sexual self-concept is also associated with frequency of contraceptive use and use at most recent intercourse. It is proposed that sexual self-concept is composed of constructs such as sexual self-schema, self-efficacy, consciousness, optimism, problem self-blame, power/other. A person expresses his or her sexuality through individuality; one’s belief and behavioral lifestyle are based on his or her own perceptions of sexuality. Adolescents need to realize the importance of having informed choices about their sexuality and sexual attributes in order to make responsible decisions.
