A sheep grazier is a person who raises sheep for a living. When the Bureau of Meteorology issues a "Warning to Sheep Graziers," it means that forecast weather conditions could be dangerous for sheep and lambs, and farmers should take precautions to protect their livestock. The warning is usually issued during the winter months when cold temperatures, rain, and strong winds can be a high risk for lamb and sheep losses. Sheep that are freshly shorn, young lambs, ewes in the third trimester of pregnancy, and sheep light in condition (body fat) are at the highest risk. To protect their sheep, farmers can move them into the most protected paddocks, ensure they have access to good feed, and maintain a healthy body condition score (fat cover) of 3+ during winter. The Bureau of Meteorology puts out weather warning updates several times a day, and these warnings are also announced on local radio stations.
