Shot blasting is a process used to remove debris and irregularities from concrete, metal, and other industrial surfaces. It is similar to sandblasting, but different in execution and effectiveness. Shot blasting uses a centrifugal blast wheel that shoots media, like steel shot, onto a surface at high velocity. This knocks the surface free of debris and other material, and can be used to clean surfaces or prepare them for painting or coating. Shot blasting can be an excellent abrasion technique for industries or operations that require deep abrasive penetration on denser materials. Some common applications for shot blasting include preparing a concrete floor for further treatment, completely removing residual coatings, cleaning or stripping rust from metal surfaces, and removing or preparing surfaces for paint line striping. The profile produced by a shot blaster is unique and mandated by the coatings manufacturer to ensure a thorough bond and warranty. However, a shot blaster is generally not suited for thick coatings or adhesive removals.
