A shotgun start is a golf tournament format in which all the players in a tournament begin playing at the same time, but from a different place on the course. Each player will start at a different hole when the tournament begins, and the players will continue along the course in order from the hole where they began. For example, if a player begins at hole 15, they will then move to hole 16-18 and then continue to hole 1 and play through 14. Before starting the round, all the participating golfers will be on the course at the same time with each group positioned on a different hole. A shotgun start allows a tournament to end at the same time it takes the slowest foursome to finish a full round or 18 holes of golf. This starting format is popular for charity events, as everyone starts and finishes at the same time, allowing for a post-event meal where the prizes can be awarded. It can also be used for large group and corporate tournaments as well as events where the participants arrive at the venue together on a bus.
