SHRM certification is a credential that shows an individuals competence in key areas of human resources and can boost their credibility in the field. The Society of Human Resource Management (SHRM) offers two certifications: SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) and SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP).

  • SHRM-CP: This certification is designed for individuals performing HR or HR-related duties or pursuing a career in Human Resources. Basic working knowledge in HR is recommended. The SHRM-CP is targeted at the operational level of human resources and includes training on foundational HR elements, such as policy implementation, technology and data collection, disciplinary action, and compliance.

  • SHRM-SCP: This certification is intended for senior and executive-level HR roles. It focuses more heavily on strategic elements of HR. To be eligible for this certification, an individual must have a work history of at least three years performing strategic-level HR/HR-related duties or have held the SHRM-CP credential for at least three years and be working in a senior-level HR role.

To earn either certification, an individual must complete the required education courses and an online assessment based on the SHRM BODY of Applied Skills and Knowledge (BASK), a global standard for the key areas needed to succeed in human resource management. SHRM certification is different from its specialty credentials.

Earning a SHRM certification makes an individual a recognized expert and leader in HR. Benefits include higher levels of credibility as HR professionals and increased earning potential.
