Six is a British musical comedy that premiered on Londons West End in 2019 and has since become a global sensation. The musical is a modern retelling of the lives of the six wives of Henry VIII, presented in the form of a pop concert). The personalities and songs of the six queens are modeled after contemporary pop stars, and the show incorporates modern pop culture references and sass. The musical takes artistic liberties in its portrayal of these characters, but it does incorporate some elements of historical fact, such as the marriages, divorces, and executions of the six queens).
The musical features all six wives of Henry VIII, and each queen takes a turn singing and telling her story to see who suffered the most due to Henry and should, therefore, become the groups lead singer. Six frames its story as a makeshift talent competition in which the wife whose life was most tragic "wins". The rules are simple: "The queen who was dealt the worst hand...shall be the one to lead the band". Each wife sings a solo summarizing her experiences, engaging in acerbic banter in between verses.
Six is a high-energy musical that runs for 80 minutes, making it the shortest musical currently running on Broadway. It has won 23 awards, including the 2022 Tony Award for Best Original Score (Music and Lyrics) and the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Musical. The musical has been extended through February 2024 due to popular demand).
