SLED stands for South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, which is a statewide investigative law enforcement agency in South Carolina. Its primary mission is to provide quality manpower and technical assistance to law enforcement agencies throughout the state and to conduct investigations on behalf of the state as directed by the Governor and Attorney General. Some of the key functions of SLED include:
- Enforcing the states criminal laws, including the operation of a statewide criminal justice information system, coordination of counter-terrorism efforts, and the investigation of arson and explosive devices.
- Investigating child fatalities, crimes against vulnerable adults, and the interdiction of narcotics.
- Operating the states forensics laboratory and maintaining specialized tactical response units.
- Regulating the sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in the state, as well as licensing security guards, private investigators, and polygraph examiners.
SLED also has a citizen complaint process for complaints against SLED or SLED agents. Citizens can make a complaint with SLED by emailing a completed form to [email protected]. A record of the complaint will be forwarded to the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR) of SLED for evaluation and assignment. They will decide whether the complaint should be handled by the involved member’s supervisor or whether to initiate an internal affairs investigation.
