A skilled nursing facility (SNF) is a type of healthcare residence for individuals who require a higher level of medical care than can be provided in an assisted living facility or nursing home. SNFs offer 24/7 medical care and rehabilitation services from trained professionals. Skilled nursing care is provided by trained registered nurses in a medical setting under a doctor’s supervision. Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) covers skilled nursing facility care for a limited time (on a short-term basis) if certain conditions apply. Skilled nursing facilities are certified to participate in, and be reimbursed by Medicare. The difference between a skilled nursing facility and a nursing home comes down to the care provided – skilled nursing care vs a nursing home level of care.
