Social reproduction is a concept used in sociology, anthropology, and adjacent disciplines to describe the reproduction of social structures and systems, mainly on the basis of particular preconditions in demographics, education, and inheritance of material property or legal titles. It is the maintenance and continuation of existing social relations, and it is the passing on of social inequality across generations. Social reproduction is a lens through which to analyze the persistence of society over time, even as its human and material components keep changing. Its main value is in identifying and explaining the logic that organizes finite, ever-changing things and people into categories, positions, and patterns of behavior that exceed their individual existence. Social reproduction theory is a variety of Marxs notion of economic reproduction, and according to sociologist Pierre Bourdieu, there are four types of capital that contribute to social reproduction in society: economic capital, cultural capital, social capital, and symbolic capital. Social reproduction is distinct from the term as it is used in Marxist feminism to discuss reproductive labor.
