The Socrates Award is a football award that acknowledges humanitarian work by a champion footballer. The award was named after Brazilian national team legend, Brazilian football player, and doctor, Sócrates Brasileiro Sampaio de Souza Vieira de Oliveira, commonly known as just Socrates. There are different types of Socrates Awards, including:

  • Socrates Award for Excellence in Teaching: This award is given for outstanding teaching for tenure-track faculty members who have not yet received tenure.

  • Socrates Award by the Brennan Rehabilitation Foundation: This award is presented to individuals who best embody the mantra of the Socrates creed, generally derived from the Latin phrase “healthy mind, healthy body”.

  • Socrates Award for the best social initiative by a champion footballer: This award acknowledges humanitarian work by a champion footballer. The inaugural winner in 2022 was former Liverpool forward and current Bayern Munich player Sadio Mané, who received the award in honor of his humanitarian work in his native Senegal, which included funding a school and hospital in his hometown of Bambali. The 2023 winner of the Socrates Award is Vinicius Junior, who was honored for his charitable foundation supporting underprivileged children in Brazil and his public anti-racist stance.

The Socrates Award was first presented in 2022, one of the awards at the Ballon dOr gala presentation night. The voting panel was composed of six members.
