Soft tennis is a racket game played on a court of two halves, separated by a net. It is similar to regular tennis, but with some differences. Soft tennis originated in Japan in 1884, and it is played primarily in Asia, especially in Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, India, Thailand, and the Philippines. Here are some key features of soft tennis:
-
Ball: Soft tennis uses soft rubber balls instead of hard yellow balls used in regular tennis. The balls are soft, hollow, and light, made of rubber and filled with air. They are 6.6cm in size and 30~31 grams in weight, and they bounce 70 to 80 cm when dropped from a height of 150cm.
-
Racket: Soft tennis rackets are lighter and more flexible than regular tennis rackets, with a lower string compression. This is because the softness of the ball requires a different type of racket to make the best use of it.
-
Scoring: The scoring and gameplay in soft tennis are the same as those in regular tennis. Matches are played in a three-set format, where a player or team to win two sets first wins the match. A world championship is conducted for the sport every four years in which national teams from several countries take part.
-
Rules: The rules of soft tennis are similar to those of regular tennis. The competition is started with the toss, and the winner decides whether to serve or receive first and the end he/she wants to play in first. The serve has to fall on the diagonally opposite box from where a player is serving. Balls are allowed to bounce a maximum of one time before it is returned.
Soft tennis is a sport that can be played in singles and doubles format. The dimension of the court is exactly the same as lawn tennis, with markings for singles and doubles court. With a soft ball, light racket, low string compression, and reduced speed of the ball after bouncing on the court, everyone, irrespective of sex and age, can enjoy the game of soft tennis.
