  • Soils serve as engineering media for construction of foundations, roadbeds, dams, and buildings.
  • Soils are a record of past climates, organisms, and landscapes.
  • Soils are a source of extractable materials, such as ores and clay, which are used for ceramics, construction, and industrial processes.

In summary, soil is a complex mixture of minerals, water, air, organic matter, and countless organisms that are the decaying remains of once-living things. It is the "skin of the earth" and is capable of supporting plant life and is vital to life on earth.
