Sonia Sotomayor is an American lawyer and jurist who serves as an associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. She is known for being the first Latina and third woman appointed to the Supreme Court. Sotomayor is also known for her trust in the judicial process and her cutthroat attitude toward ill-prepared attorneys. During her tenure on the Supreme Court, Sotomayor has been identified with concern for the rights of defendants and calls for reform of the criminal justice system. She is known for making impassioned dissents on issues of race, gender, and ethnic identity. Sotomayor has ruled to uphold the Affordable Care Act and legalize same-sex marriage.
