Southeast Asia is a region in Asia that is geographically diverse and consists of eleven countries. The region stretches from eastern India to China and is generally divided into two subregions: Mainland Southeast Asia (or the Indochinese Peninsula) and Maritime Southeast Asia. The countries that make up Southeast Asia are Brunei, Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Timor-Leste, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Southeast Asia is one of the most culturally diverse regions in the world, with many different languages and ethnicities. Historically, Southeast Asia was significantly influenced by Indian, Chinese, Muslim, and colonial cultures, which became core components of the regions cultural and political institutions. Most modern Southeast Asian countries were colonized by European powers.
The islands of maritime Southeast Asia can range from the very large, such as Borneo, Sumatra, Java, and Luzon, to tiny pinpoints on the map. The region is known for its unique sea and jungle products, which were much desired by international traders in early times.
Southeast Asia is also one of the most dynamic areas of the world economically, accounting for its growing international significance. The region has a rich history, with human habitation dating back to around a million years ago. The cultures of Southeast Asia are diverse, but there are some traits that are common to the region, such as the relatively high status of women and a tendency to place sacred sites on hills or mountains.
