Spaying is a surgical procedure that removes the ovaries and uterus in female animals, including cats. It is a common method of birth control and behavior modification, and it is recommended that all non-breeding cats be sterilized. Spaying eliminates the risk of ovarian and uterine cancers, which are the most common types of cancer diagnosed in intact (unspayed) female cats. It also prevents reproductive disorders like uterine infection (pyometra), uterine rupture and torsion, metritis, and cystic changes, which can be fatal and are not always treatable. Spaying also eliminates heat cycles, which can be stressful for cats and their owners.

Spaying is a major surgical procedure that involves general anesthesia. During the surgery, the veterinarian makes an incision in the cats abdomen, removes the ovaries and/or uterus, and then closes the incision with several layers of stitches. The stitches are often removed after seven to ten days.

There are many advantages to spaying your cat, including population control, reduced risk of cancer and reproductive disease, elimination of heat cycles, and behavioral advantages. Spayed cats tend to have fewer health problems, and they are often calmer, more gentle, and more affectionate.

It is recommended that cats be spayed prior to their first heat cycle, which is usually around six months of age. However, healthy cats as young as six weeks of age can be spayed safely.
