The Al-Aqsa Mosque is located in the Old City of Jerusalem on a hill known to Jews as Har ha-Bayit, or Temple Mount, and to Muslims internationally as al-Haram al-Sharif, or The Noble Sanctuary. It is considered the third holiest site in Islam, after Mecca and Medina, and is home to two Muslim holy places: the Dome of the Rock and the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The mosque was built in the 8th century AD and is mentioned several times in the Quran. Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad ascended to heaven from the Al-Aqsa Mosque. The Al-Aqsa Mosque is considered "the most sensitive site in the Israel-Palestinian conflict" because it is sacred to both Muslims and Jews. The mosque has been a flashpoint for deadly violence over matters of sovereignty and religion in Jerusalem.
