The Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification is a professional certification administered by the Human Resources Certification Institute (HRCI) . It is the senior-most human resources certification for those who have demonstrated a strategic mastery of the HR body of knowledge. The SPHR validates the knowledge and skills of HR professionals, specifically in the strategic and policy-making aspects of HR management. The credential is designed for big-picture HR thinkers responsible for planning rather than implementing HR policy. HR professionals with strategic and policy-making backgrounds are ideal candidates for the SPHR.
To be eligible for the SPHR, you must meet one of the following conditions for education and/or experience:
- Have at least four years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Master’s degree or higher
- Have at least five years of experience in a professional-level HR position and a Bachelor’s degree
- Have at least seven years of experience in a professional-level HR position
The SPHR certification is valid for three years after testing. To maintain the credential, you must earn 45 HR and 15 Business recertification credits (60 total) over a three-year time span or retake the exam.
Getting the SPHR certification can benefit you in several ways, including building your confidence and authority in HR, keeping your HR knowledge current, and increasing the number of career opportunities available to you. Many organizations seek out SPHR professionals for their proven accountability for HR department goals, for breadth and depth of knowledge in all HR disciplines, and for understanding business issues beyond the HR function.
To take the SPHR exam, you need to apply through HRCI, read the handbook, and schedule your exam within six months of getting approved. The HRCI also offers preparation materials so that you can walk into your exam feeling confident.
