Spinal stenosis of the lumbar region is a condition where the spinal canal in the lower back narrows, causing pressure on the spinal cord or nerves that go from the spinal cord to the muscles. This narrowing can be caused by various factors, including wear-and-tear changes in the spine related to arthritis, herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, and osteoarthritis of the spine. Symptoms of lumbar spinal stenosis can include lower back pain, sciatica, numbness and tingling in the legs or feet, weakness in the foot, incontinence, and loss of sexual function. The symptoms may come on gradually over time and can worsen over time. Imaging studies such as X-rays and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can diagnose lumbar spinal stenosis. Treatment options include physical therapy, medication, and surgery.
