Spirit Cooking is a performance art project by Marina Abramovic, a world-renowned performance artist. It was first produced in 1996 and includes a series of etchings that feature absurdist recipes with ingredients such as "fingertips of the artist" and "a ruby that has been soaking for three days". The project later evolved into a form of dinner party entertainment that Abramovic occasionally lays on for collectors, donors, and friends. The name of the project, "Spirit Cooking," has been the subject of controversy and conspiracy theories. Some people have interpreted it as a satanic ritual or a sacrament in the religion of Thelema, which was founded by alleged "satanist Aleister Crowley". However, these interpretations are not accurate. In fact, the "Spirit Cooking" dinner involves cooking a few simple dishes for about 20 people who had donated to Abramovics art institute. The project includes some comico-mystical, self-helpy instructions like "spit inside your naval / until the lake is filled / lie motionless / listen to the heartbeat / of a dog," but they are not meant to be taken seriously.
