The spiritual self is the inner essence of a person that connects them to the sacred, the supernatural, and the universe. It is the most intimate, inner subjective part of the self that is able to experience how to argue and discriminate, have moral sensibility and conscience, and the unconquerable will. The spiritual self is universal, carries the potential of awareness, is permanent, ageless, and provides centeredness and compassion. It is the authentic self, the unconditioned part, the you without patterns. The spiritual self is different from our feelings and even from our body, and it is described as the most enduring and intimate part of the self because of the connection it has with the sacred.
The spiritual self is concerned with the innermost workings of a persons mind, behavior, beliefs, and morals that involve every aspect of the human as a person. It is the part of the self that gives a deeper purpose or meaning to ones life. Spirituality can be understood as a search for the sacred, a process through which people seek to discover, hold on to, and when necessary, transform whatever they hold sacred in their lives.
The spiritual self is personal for each individual, and it can be elusive to find. However, there are some ways to connect with the spiritual self, such as through worship, prayer, reading scripture, attending sacraments, and doing sacrifices. If the intellect gets in the way of accessing the spiritual self, one can recall a moment in time when they were peaceful and content, which may be associated with nature, love, creativity, or anything else that induced a sense of serenity.
