A sprint race in F1 is a shorter version of a normal race, taking place over a shorter distance of 100km, which is roughly one-third of the distance of a regular F1 race. The sprint race is designed to provide a short and fast-paced racing spectacle, with drivers racing flat-out from start to finish without the need to pit. The sprint race is part of a new format introduced in 2021, which includes an additional qualifying and race to replace two free-practice sessions. The sprint race is held on Saturday of a Grand Prix weekend, with the qualifying session held in the morning and the sprint race itself in the afternoon. The result of the sprint race does not impact the grid for Sundays Grand Prix, but the top eight drivers score points, with the driver who finishes first receiving eight points. The sprint race is intended to provide more competitive action on Fridays and Saturdays, and drivers the opportunity to score more points.
