The Sprint Shootout is a new qualifying session that is part of the new sprint race weekend format in Formula 1. The sprint race was introduced to add excitement to certain races and offer venues the chance to have three days of competitive running instead of an entire Friday dedicated to practice sessions. The sprint race is a much shortened version of the grand prix, covering 100km of the circuit hosting the event. The new format sees a new ‘sprint shootout’ take place on Saturday morning instead of a second practice session, with traditional qualifying on Friday now setting the grid for Sunday’s grand prix. The Sprint Shootout follows the same three-session knockout format as usual qualifying, but each Q1, Q2, and Q3 segment has been shortened to 12, 10, and 8 minutes, respectively. The key difference between Friday qualifying and the Saturday Shootout will be timings. The Sprint Shootout dictates that all teams must use new tires, with new mediums used in Q1 and Q2, while drivers setting a lap time in Q3 will have to use new soft tires. The top eight drivers score points, with the driver who finishes P1 receiving eight points.
