The Sprint Shootout is a new session introduced in the 2023 Formula 1 season, which is part of the new sprint race weekend format. The Sprint Shootout is a standalone qualifying session that takes place on Saturday, replacing the second practice session. It follows the same three-session knockout format as usual qualifying, but each Q1, Q2, and Q3 session is shorter, with 12 minutes for Q1, 10 minutes for Q2, and 8 minutes for Q3. The Sprint Shootout determines the grid for the sprint race, which takes place later on the same day. The sprint race is a shortened version of the grand prix, covering 100km of the circuit hosting the event. Unlike prior seasons, qualifying for the sprint race takes place on Saturday. In these races, pit stops are not required to be made by drivers. The Sprint Shootout and the sprint race are part of a new format that aims to offer fans more competitive action on Fridays and Saturdays, and drivers the opportunity to score more points.
