There is no Social Security Number (SSN) in India. Instead, India has Aadhaar, a 12-digit unique identification number issued to Indian citizens by the Central government and managed by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) . Aadhaar can be used as a single proof of identity and address for any resident in India. The SSN is a nine-digit number used in the United States to track worker’s earnings and keep a record of social security benefits to be received by them. Temporary workers are also allowed to obtain SSN in certain cases. There is no legal requirement to have an SSN if it is not required for Social Security or taxation purposes in the US, but in practice, one is required for many other purposes, such as opening a bank account or applying for a driving license. Social security in India includes a variety of statutory insurances and social grant schemes bundled into a formerly complex and fragmented system run by the Indian government at the federal and the state level. The Code on Social Security, 2020 is part of the Indian labor code that deals with employees social security and has provisions on retirement pension and provident fund, healthcare insurance and medical benefits, sick pay and leaves, unemployment benefits, and paid parental leaves.
