Strava is an American internet service for tracking physical exercise that incorporates social network features. It was founded in 2009 by Michael Horvath and Mark Gainey, who initially met in the 1980s as members of Harvard Universitys rowing crew. Strava started out tracking mostly outdoor cycling and running activities using Global Positioning System (GPS) data, but now incorporates several dozen other exercise types, including indoor activities. Strava uses a freemium model with some features only available in the paid subscription plan. Some of the features of Strava include:
-
GPS Tracking: Strava turns every iPhone and Android into a sophisticated running and cycling computer, and it works with GPS watches and head units too.
-
Social Network: Strava incorporates social media features that allow users to post their exercises to followers. Alongside a GPS map of their exercise, users can also post pictures and videos. Followers can then comment on posts and give kudos in the form of a like button.
-
Challenges: Strava allows users to join and create challenges, where they can chase new goals, collect digital badges, and stay accountable.
-
Clubs: All kinds of groups form clubs on Strava to organize activities and build communities - friends, teams, brands, gear shops, and more.
-
Real-time Location Sharing: Strava allows users to share their location in real-time with up to three safety contacts.
Strava is compatible with thousands of devices, including Wear OS, Samsung, Fitbit, and Garmin. Strava includes both a free version and a subscription version with premium features.
