Strong Style is a style of professional wrestling that originated in Japan and combines pro wrestling moves and martial arts. It is characterized by its intense action and "stiff" hits, meaning the wrestlers hit each other harder than in other styles of wrestling. Straight up punches are not used as much as open palm slaps, forearms, kicks, suplexes, and throw type moves. Wrestlers like Shinsuke Nakamura, Togi Makabe, Katsuyori Shibata, and Tomohiro Ishii are known for using this style. The term "Strong Style" was coined by Antonio Inoki, who used it to describe his own style of wrestling. Inokis Strong Style was influenced by martial arts and British-style brawling, and it aimed to make matches look and sound as real as possible. The style also included more submission holds and wins than other styles of wrestling. Strong Style has had a considerable influence on the sport of mixed martial arts.
