Subspace is a term used in BDSM to describe an altered mental state that some submissives experience during intense or erotic interaction with their Dominant. It is characterized by a range of emotions and feelings that can trigger a heightened response to the Dominants manipulations, and can leave the submissive emotionally and psychologically vulnerable and at risk. Subspace differs from individual to individual, but it is generally described as feeling "floaty," "foggy," "euphoric," or like an out-of-body experience. Entering subspace can be the ultimate goal for a submissive, and it is often described as a feeling of floating or flying. Submissives in subspace may have a higher pain tolerance, have difficulty speaking, and lose all sense of time. Subspace is generally regarded as safe, as long as the Dominant is fully aware and respectful of the submissives boundaries, which need to be negotiated before play begins.
