The Supernova Festival was an outdoor trance music festival that took place in the western Negev desert, approximately 5 km from the Gaza-Israel barrier, near kibbutz Reim. It was produced by an organizer called Nova (also referred to as Tribe of Nova) and was the Israeli edition of Universo Paralello, a psytrance festival started 23 years prior in Bahia, Brazil. The festival was intended to be a joyful and music-filled event, celebrating the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, which marks the harvest gathering and serves as a commemoration of the divine protection granted by God to the children of Israel during their exodus from Egypt.
However, on October 7, 2023, Hamas militants initiated a surprise invasion of Israel from the Gaza Strip and attacked the Supernova Sukkot Gathering, massacring 270 civilians, injuring many more, and taking an unknown number of hostages. This was the largest terror attack in Israels history and the worst Israeli civilian massacre ever. The festival transformed into a harrowing incident that will be remembered as one of the most significant acts of terror perpetrated by members of Hamas. The attack has been called "Israels 9/11" and has resulted in the loss of about 1,500 lives among both civilians and military personnel on both sides.
