A surrogate mother is a woman who agrees to carry and deliver a child for another couple or individual who will become the childs parent(s) after birth. There are two types of surrogate mothers: traditional surrogates and gestational surrogates. A traditional surrogate is a woman who gets artificially inseminated with the fathers sperm and carries the baby to term. In this case, the surrogate is the biological mother of the child. A gestational surrogate, on the other hand, carries and delivers a child for a couple or individual using in vitro fertilization (IVF). In this process, doctors create an embryo by fertilizing eggs from the intended mother or an egg donor with sperm from the intended father or a sperm donor. The embryo is then implanted in the uterus of the gestational surrogate. The gestational surrogate does not provide the egg, so she is not genetically related to the child. The biological mother is still the woman whose egg was fertilized. Surrogacy is a complex process that involves legal, social, and psychological complications.
