Taekwondo is a Korean martial art that involves punching and kicking techniques. The name "taekwondo" means "the way of kicking and punching". It is recognized as one of the oldest forms of martial arts in the world, dating back over 2,000 years. Taekwondo is characterized by its emphasis on head-height kicks, jumping and spinning kicks, and fast kicking techniques. It is also a complete system of self-defense and personal improvement, with sharp, strong angular movements and free-flowing circular movements to produce a balance of beauty and power.

Taekwondo has become a popular international sport, with the World Taekwondo Federation (WTF) established as the international governing body for the sport aspects of Taekwondo. Taekwondo first gained acceptance as an Olympic sport when it appeared as a demonstration event in the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games, and became a full medal sport competition beginning in 2000 at the Sydney Olympics.

Taekwondo competitions involve two fighters in the same weight category, with the objective of each competitor being to score points by landing blows and kicks on their opponent. The center of the competition area is octagonal-shaped and measures 8m in diameter, and contestants must wear a dobok or a white competition uniform.
