The Tamil film industry is commonly known as Kollywood. The name is a portmanteau of Kodambakkam, a business and residential area in central Chennai where the industry is based, and Hollywood. The first Tamil silent film, Keechaka Vadham, was directed by R. Nataraja Mudaliar in 1918, and the first Tamil talking feature film, Kalidas, was directed by H. M. Reddy and released on 31 October 1931. Over the last quarter of the 20th century, Tamil films established a global presence, with strong box office collections in Tamil-speaking nations such as Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia, as well as distribution throughout the Middle East, Oceania, Europe, North America, parts of Africa, and Japan.
