Tattoo flu is a flu-like illness that some people experience after getting a tattoo. It is caused by trauma from the tattooing process, which triggers the immune system response. The immune system responds to the needle in a protective way by sending in white blood cells to help fight off potential infection, which can cause symptoms such as mild fever, chills, body aches, dizziness, fatigue, nausea/vomiting, stomach ache, and diarrhea. These symptoms are usually mild and quick to pass, lasting only 24-48 hours. However, if the symptoms persist for longer than two days, it is important to make an appointment with a doctor to rule out infection or other medical problems. To care for a new tattoo and prevent tattoo flu, it is recommended to keep it covered, be gentle, pat it down nicely, and avoid scrubbing it. It is also important to allow it to breathe when necessary, take the cover off a few hours later, never pick, and avoid the sun.
