The Texas Tax-Free Weekend (Aug. 8-10, 2025) exempts sales tax on many items primarily for back-to-school shopping. Here's what is tax-free:
- Most clothing and footwear priced under $100 (e.g., jeans, shirts, dresses, sneakers, casual athletic wear like tennis shoes, jogging suits, swimsuits)
- Backpacks for school use, including wheeled backpacks and messenger bags (limit 10 per purchase unless certified for school use)
- School supplies listed on the state's eligible items list (pens, pencils, notebooks, binders, calculators, crayons, scissors, lunch boxes, paper)
- Baby diapers
- Scout uniforms
- Children's costumes
- Certain work clothes
- Face masks (cloth or disposable fabric)
- Online, in-store, phone, mail, and layaway purchases qualify if made within the holiday and items are under $100 including shipping
What does NOT qualify:
- Items $100.01 or more (no partial exemption)
- Computers, printers, textbooks, and software
- Jewelry, watches, handbags, purses, wallets, umbrellas, luggage, gym bags, duffle bags, briefcases
- Specialized athletic or protective gear not worn casually (e.g., football pads, golf cleats)
- Clothing rentals, alterations, cleaning
- Fabric, thread, buttons, yarn, and materials to make or repair clothing
- Clothing subscription boxes
- Non-school-use bags (framed backpacks, luggage, computer bags, athletic or gym bags)
- Shipping charges that push the item price over $100
Each individual item must be under $100 for the exemption. Shipping counts toward the price limit. For online orders, payment and processing must occur during the holiday. This tax-free weekend is a great opportunity for families to save on clothes, shoes, backpacks, and school supplies needed for the upcoming school year.
