- Baby diapers, scout uniforms, children's costumes, and some work clothes priced under $100
What did NOT qualify for the tax exemption included:
- Items priced $100.01 or more
- Specialized athletic or protective gear like football pads or helmets
- Accessories such as jewelry, watches, handbags, purses, wallets, luggage, gym bags
- Framed backpacks and non-school use bags
- Clothing rentals or alterations
- Fabric, thread, buttons, or materials to make clothing
- Computers, textbooks, software, desks, furniture
- Clothing subscription boxes
- Business account purchases without exemption certificates
- Shipping charges that raise the total above $100
This tax-free weekend applied to in-store, online, mail, and phone purchases, as long as the payment was processed during the weekend and the item met the price limits. Layaway plans could also take advantage of the tax holiday if the final payment was made during the weekend. This tax holiday was expected to save Texas shoppers approximately $133.2 million in state and local sales taxes during the weekend.
