Texas A&M University (Texas A&M, A&M, or TAMU) is a public, land-grant, research university in College Station, Texas. It was founded in 1876 as the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Texas, the states first public institution of higher education. Today, the letters "A&M" no longer explicitly stand for anything, but the universitys culture is a product of its founding as a rural military and agricultural school.
Texas A&M is the flagship institution of the Texas A&M University System and is classified among "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity". It is the only university in Texas to hold simultaneous designations as a land-, sea-, and space-grant institution. The university has the largest student body in the United States as of 2021.
Texas A&M has several branch campuses, including Texas A&M University at Galveston and Texas A&M University at Qatar. The universitys official colors are maroon and white, and its mascot is the Aggie. The Corps of Cadets, which was established in 1876, has played an important part in the universitys history and development.
